Nichols Arboretum Maternity Couples Session in Ann Arbor, Michigan - Molly + Rich
On a late fall day in November, Molly and Rich took a stroll with me through the Arboretum to commemorate this special time in their lives— the last couple months as a family of two!
I know it can sometimes feel like there’s never enough time in our busy schedules to make pictures a priority. I think especially people who are pregnant deserve a gigantic award just for getting out of bed most days, let alone putting on makeup and doing your hair and preparing to be in front of a camera with a body that hasn’t quite felt like your own for the past couple months. But I really do feel like maternity photos are so special and so important for this reason. Some day, when your kids are too old and too cool for you to snuggle, you’ll look back at the days of being pregnant and feel a certain kind of nostalgia and appreciation for the time that you can’t get back. And pictures are such a huge part of helping your memory along and recalling things you might not have ever remembered otherwise.
Maybe Molly and Rich will look at these pictures and always remember that November 19th was an extremely nice day for the end of November (Halloween was definitely colder, though I feel like it always is), and that we felt really lucky to stumble upon a tree that was displaying peak fall color in vivid yellow even though most of the foliage around us was either gone or a particularly boring shade of brown. Maybe they will remember that I made them walk back and forth past me, multiple times while giving them silly prompts that probably felt ridiculous to execute but made their pictures excellent because the interaction those prompts produced were genuine, real emotion that captures their relationship in an authentic way. Or maybe they will remember that we heard screaming and shouting coming from the backyard of one of the houses on the fringe of the park (and that for a minute we were concerned we might witness some kind of domestic incident). I hope it’s not the latter.
If you think you don’t have time for pictures, I urge you to reconsider— these photos of Molly and Rich took probably less than a half hour. A mini session is more than enough time to get great pictures you will cherish forever, and not so much time that you will miss out on anything important if your life feels impossibly busy!

A Nature Lover's Paradise in Ann Arbor
Nestled in the heart of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Nichols Arboretum stands as an awe-inspiring testament to the beauty of nature. With its sprawling gardens, lush meadows, and enchanting woodland trails, this hidden gem entices visitors into a world brimming with tranquility and natural wonders. Spanning over 123 acres, Nichols Arboretum offers a diverse range of botanical landscapes, making it a must-visit destination for both locals and tourists alike.
Historical Significance
Originally known as the "University of Michigan Arboretum," it was renamed in 1970 to honor the university's first botany professor, William J. Beal. Nichols Arboretum, as it is known today, was established in the early 20th century through the efforts of Frederick C. Nichols, a local lumber magnate and nature enthusiast. Nichols generously donated funds to beautify and develop the Arboretum, turning it into the stunning natural sanctuary it is today.
Gardens of Delight
One of the most captivating features of Nichols Arboretum is its meticulously designed gardens, each reflecting a distinct natural habitat. The Peony Garden, for instance, bursts forth with vibrant colors and intoxicating scents in the early summer months. Carefully arranged peony blooms, ranging from delicate pastels to rich, deep hues, create a breathtaking tapestry of beauty. Fellow photographer beware: you will have to fight for time and space with other photographers during the peony blooms. Adjacent to the Peony Garden lies the beautiful and serene Gateway Garden. As one walks through its archway, they are transported into a world of harmony and tranquility. With its elegantly manicured flower beds, carefully pruned shrubs, and soothing water features, the Gateway Garden offers a peaceful respite for those seeking a moment of solitude amidst the bustling city.
Tranquil Woodland Trails
Venturing beyond the charming gardens, Nichols Arboretum boasts an extensive network of wooded trails that wind through its lush greenery. The Arboretum's crown jewel, the Nichols Arboretum Trail, offers an immersive and enchanting experience for nature enthusiasts. As one meanders along this trail, they are treated to breathtaking views of the Huron River, flowing gently alongside the wooded paths. The trail is also home to the iconic and picturesque Nichols Arboretum Peony Bridge, which provides a stunning vantage point to admire the surrounding beauty. For those seeking a more adventurous experience, the Arboretum's wildflower and bird trails beckon. These paths, lined with native wildflowers and flowering trees, play host to a rich diversity of bird species. Observing these feathered visitors in their natural habitat is a delight for both amateur and expert birdwatchers. The woodland trails are an excellent space for photography because even though it’s a popular spot and it might be heavily populated at any given time, the space is so diverse and vast that there’s always an opportunity for photos without a million people in the background. I recommend just walking the trails and finding little unoccupied spots to photograph your subjects.
Embracing Nature's Cycles
Throughout the year, Nichols Arboretum invites visitors to witness the ever-changing beauty of nature. In spring, the air is filled with the sweet fragrance of blooming cherry blossoms, while fall brings a riot of colors as the Arboretum's trees transform into vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow. Winter, with its sparkling blankets of snow, offers a different kind of enchantment, as the silence of the Arboretum creates a haven for peace and reflection.
Nichols Arboretum also hosts a variety of community events that celebrate the changing seasons. From guided nature walks and photography workshops to art exhibitions and music festivals, there is always something to engage and inspire visitors of all ages.

Beyond its stunning beauty, Nichols Arboretum is a symbol of environmental stewardship and educational excellence. The Arboretum plays a crucial role in the conservation and preservation of native plant species. It serves as an outdoor laboratory for the study of ecology, botany, and environmental science, providing a living classroom for students and researchers alike.
