7 Unique Venues in Michigan you NEED to Consider for Your Micro Wedding or Elopement

As a wedding photographer in Ann Arbor, Michigan

I think it’s important for a wedding to be both beautiful AND affordable. That’s why I developed a love for micro weddings and elopements, and that’s what you’re going to find in this list - venues that are beautiful, that will get you some gorgeous pictures and allow you to have the best experience on your wedding day without getting too overwhelmed by the cost. Choosing a unique venue is the first step in creating a wedding that really looks and feels like you and doesn’t conform to what you think your day should look like. It requires a little more work on your part, because most expensive venues make the process a little more stress-free by including everything. But if you’re stressed about money and you want your day to be different, a little extra work can be soo worth the affordability and the final product.

I also included venues all over Michigan because even though I’m an Ann Arbor wedding photographer, I still love and prioritize getting out and seeing something different and exploring the beauty of Michigan in the summer. (I swear Michigan summers are the best kept secret). If you live in Michigan, why not pick a destination that isn’t so far you’re putting a bunch of stress on yourselves and family members to travel, but if far enough that it feels special, feels like an escape, and gives you a destination to have an anniversary trip every year :)

#1 Your Backyard

I’m serious! Backyard weddings are not just a last ditch option for when you can’t afford anything else— they are severely underrated. If I could make a living doing just backyard weddings, I would do it in a second. The possibilities are endless. Invite all your neighbors. Eat whatever you want, party as long as you want, be free and happy and MARRIED in your own space on your own time. And if you don’t have a backyard, I’m sure you know someone who has one and would be nice enough to let you use it. I cannot stress this enough— backyard weddings are SO FUN.

#2 Canyon Falls - Alberta, Michigan (in the UP)

Canyon Falls in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is a perfect spot for a tucked away elopement with an incredible backdrop. If you’re looking for somewhere that is beautiful and will make dreamy wedding photos but isn’t too hard to get to, you’ve found your spot! It’s also located near the Keweenaw Bay, where there are lots of spots for photo opportunities— like the Sand Point Lighthouse (or anywhere on the bay, really). Think about this— you spend a day hiking canyon falls, driving around to different spots to take photos and explore the beauty of the UP— and then organize a dinner where you can invite your closest family and friends to join at a restaurant to celebrate! Then spend the rest of the weekend partying, find a beach somewhere and soak up sun + views + everything else the UP has to offer! And the best part about this plan is that there are no fees or permits required to elope at Canyon Falls!

#3 Bois Blanc Island Lighthouse Home - Bois Blanc Island, Michigan

This is a Vrbo property that was designed to optimize the views of the space around it. You can enjoy views of sunsets from every room, but best observation is from the top of the lighthouse itself (if that wasn’t obvious). You’ll also have private beach frontage on lake Huron clear sunset views of the Mackinac bridge— beach wedding anyone?? This would be best suited for an elopement with your 10-14 closest familiy and friends (If you all want to stay in the house), but could definitely pull off a low key micro wedding if your guests sought lodging elsewhere. There is one downside which is that the house IS on an island (accessible by ferry or plane), so you have to plan accordingly for food and provisions. But the beauty and affordability of this lighthouse home make it a really strong option in my opinion.

#4 The Glass House Community - Zeeland, Michigan

Have you ever wanted to get married in a greenhouse? This venue is an excellent spot for a micro wedding (they can accommodate up to 50 guests but the space is better suited for 30-40). Located on an historic farm, there are plenty of places for great photos but also lots of space for you and your guests to hang out and enjoy the day in a very relaxed and serene environment. The ceremony space is a small glass house (for which it is so aptly named) accompanied with greenery and tons of vintage charm. Also affordable, and we love that.

#5 Cafe Cortina - Farmington Hills, Michigan

Cafe Cortina is an Italian restaurant in Farmington Hills that makes Olive Garden look like a McDonald’s bathroom. Cortina accommodates micro weddings up to 30 guests (you can also have a larger wedding there that’s just not what this blog is about ok) and is a good option for something low key and affordable. There is a gorgeous covered courtyard for outdoor ceremonies and the garden-like atmosphere means you won’t need to do much decorating to make it look beautiful. The reception space is large without being overwhelming and is way prettier than you would expect for the inside of a restaurant. Also— Italian food; I rest my case.

#6 Frankenmuth Brewery - Frankenmuth, Michigan

If you’re into an industrial-chic vibe and also appreciate well-crafted brews, Frankenmuth Brewery offers several options for weddings. According to wedding wire, their prices start at $2000 for a reception and $1000 for a ceremony, which make it a great choice if you aren’t looking to spend big bucks on something with a similar vibe like the Shinola Hotel in Detroit. One of the best parts about the ceremony space is that even though it’s indoors, you feel like you’re outside due to the large panes of glass that make up the walls of the space (which is also incredibly ideal for natural light photographers (hi!) and the look of your pictures overall. Also did I mention the beer? No more boring domestic options from venues who don’t appreciate the value of good, fresh hops.

#7 Peacock Road Family Farm - Lansing, Michigan

I have a whole blog post about this venue so be sure to check it out — just know that this place has everything. Unless you don’t want to see adorable tiny goats on your wedding day (though I don’t know why you wouldn’t).

Time to book one of these once in a lifetime venues — and book me to capture it so I can add some photos to this blog post :)
